The lesson the six million dollar man taught us about faith

Steve Austin, Astronaut. A man barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.

I may be dating myself but those were the opening lines of the 1970’s television show the Six Million Dollar Man. Austin’s rebuild body with its machine parts enabled him to have superhuman strength and speed, as well as other powers. With these powers, Steve goes to work for the Office of Scientific Information, battling evil for the good of mankind.  Looking back it was pretty cheesy, as most of 70s television was. But there is nothing cheesy about the show’s message when applied to our faith.

No matter how faithful we believe ourselves to be in times of darkness many of us lose much of that faith and begin to question why the Lord would abandon us. Question if the Lord even exists.  In times of darkness the reality is for many of us our faith is barely alive.

Thankfully the Lord has the power to rebuild our faith.  Make it better, stronger, more spiritual and for far less than six million dollars.

It written in Isaiah 40:29-31 that:

29  He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30  Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31  But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew [1] their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

It is never to late to praise the Lord. To ask Him for forgiveness for doubting Him. To pray for Him to rain down upon us the strength to renew our faith. To make it better than before. We only need to remember we are His children and he loves us unconditionally.

Isaiah 54:10:

10  For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Remember with the Lord on our side there is no reason to fear anything. There is no reason to abandon our faith. But if we do He has promised us He will help us to renew it.

Isaiah 41:10:

10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

When the Lord strengthen us and provides us with a renewed faith it is our responsibility to pay it forward, to use our renewed faith and go out and praise His name to others. To go to work in his ministry battling evil for the good of mankind.

A Christian, bitter and lost, their faith barely alive. He can rebuild him. Make his faith better than it was before. Better, more spiritual, stronger than it was before.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ

So today my horoscope said:

Dealing with the people you care for turns out to be a heavy burden. Spread the word far and wide, for it is time to set yourself free. After all, this kind of dependence ends up taking a serious toll. It’s not your job to carry someone else’s cross.

What a horrible concept. As Christians we believe that the Lord blesses us with His love and the strength to get through the storms that we face.  He made the ultimate sacrifice when he  gave unto us his son to relieve us our sin. As is written of Jesus in 1 Peter 2:24:

He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Knowing this how could we not pay His blessings forward to our fellow man.  When the burden they are facing becomes too much for them to carry alone should we not lift them up?  Would we not want someone to help steady us when we are staining under the weight of our earthly troubles?  Should we not we not help each other strengthen our faith when it waivers so we are reminded the Lord is working to relieve us of their angst?  Have we forgotten that we are all children of the Lord and He never gives us more than we can bear and maybe it is through the compassion we show each other in difficult times that He is lessening our load? Do we not believe that He will look down upon us favorably and bless us ten fold for showing compassion to others? Remember it is not only the righteous thing to do but we are commanded to do it in Galatians 6:2:

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ

Remember as humans none of us is immune to troubles. Psalms 34:18 tells us:

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all

How weak and selfish are we if we are to expect the Lord to carry our burdens and believe it is not our responsibility to provide comfort and aid to others. That we look at our assistance to others as a burden to ourselves and allow them to continue to struggle, crushed under the weight of their troubles.

May the Lord give us the strength to help those in need and the foresight to never turn outback on others.

The Lord will always be with you

Something is weighing heavy on your soul. You seem lost and on the brink of no return. Yet you have turned away from your most powerful ally, the Lord.

Maybe you are worried how He will react if you talk to Him about your troubles. Maybe you think that because in good times you have gone so long without talking to Him and now feared his reaction when you reach out to him in times of despair.

Maybe you think that if you let Him in you’ll be a burden to Him. That you only are coming to Him because of the adversity you are facing.

Maybe you think He doesn’t care.  Why else would you be in this situation if He did?

But what you should know is very simply this – the Lord will never let you walk alone. Not today, not tomorrow. You are His child and there will never be anything you cannot talk to Him about. Nothing you can not overcome with Him by your side. If you have faith in Him there will never be a time He will not be there for you.

He does these things not because He has too. But because of His love for us. A love that is everlasting. A love that saw Him give us His only son so that we me be forgiven of sin.

Embrace Him, praise Him, talk to Him, free yourself from worry and have faith that He will unburden your soul from the troubles that are consuming you.
