Today our difference divide us perhaps tomorrow we will be better and our differences will be our strength.

I am pleased to see that we have differences.
May we together become greater than the sum of both of us.

-Surak of Vulcan

I am the child of Charles and Frances Cooke two African-Americans born in the early 1900s in the southern part of the United States. As such I have always identified myself as African-American and from time to time was reminded of this by society. From being chased out of a park while being called a nigger when I was 10, having a police officer point a gun at my head when I was 15 simply because I made the mistake of tossing a football around the yard of a white friend who lived in the suburbs, to being pulled over numerous times in my early 20s despite not fitting the “profile” because as kind of a nerd I normally had on penny loafers with argyle socks and matching sweater but my skin color was still the wrong shade.

While my self identification is the result of being raised, loved, and natured by two exceptional individuals who themselves were also African-American I am also adopted, a fact that was kept hidden from me until my late 30s. I know nothing of my biological father other than the fact that he wasn’t African-American. Recently I completed one of those DNA test and found out I was in fact 54.6% Sub-Saharan African and 43.9% European. Interesting I thought as I looked at my results how many of those Europeans had looked at me and seen just the color of my skin and thought of me as inferior? How many of them don’t look like me but have a similar ancestry? Does it really matter what my ancestry is? Does it define how I should live my life?

Our ancestry defines our culture and to a large extend our culture is a leading factor in defining who we are. But while it is a leading factor it does not change the fact that we are all human. Humans with differences but humans nevertheless. It is our differences that If embraced instead of feared would in fact make us stronger as a species. The sun, Earth’s primary source of energy, emits white light but that white light is actually a composite of all of the visible frequencies of light. Without the differences all the colors bring there would be no light at all. So is the case with the human species? Where would we be without our many differences? How would we advance and grow without the varied contributions of so many cultures?

The question before us now is how do we begin to embrace our differences as a species when our entire existence shows we let those differences divide us. Seemingly there is no answer to that. Man has always fostered a sense of loyalty rooted in group identity. We pit race against race, religion against religion, prejudice against prejudice. Divide and conquer has always been mankind’s rallying call. I am pessimistic about our ability to overcome the us versus them mentality in the short term. However I am optimistic that the human is a very promising species and as Captain Jean Luc Picard once said “inside you is the potential to make yourself better…and that is what it is to be human. To make yourself more than you are.” Today our difference divide us perhaps tomorrow we will be better and our differences will be our strength.

ENOUGH!

I thought about this long and hard.  I wonder what type of country we are now.  Is this what defines us as country. Hatred, racism, intolerance. It saddens me when the death of seven year old Jazmine Barnes in what appears to be a racially motivated drive by is overshadowed by a government shutdown that at its core is really about appeasing the fears of those who would remain divided in hate rather than united in love. Our supposed leader constantly stirring those fears with divisive, hate filled speech. It is time we stop pretending, stop trying not to offend, stop looking to be politically correct.  It is time we stand up, time we speak up, time we make over voices cry out with a roar. ENOUGH.  We will not let hatred rule us and we will not allow those who preach the freedom to believe they can do so.

Do not let this moment pass without showing who we can become not who we seemingly are.  Let us show the proper respect for a young life sadly taken from us to soon.

Post the name and picture of Jazmine Barnes on your Facebook timeline, your twitter account, your instagram page, whatever social media you are on. Offer your prayers and condolences to her grieving family, let them know we are with them and let us pray to the Lord to give us the strength as human beings to begin to move away from these type of tragedies.

Can You Dig It

I say the future is ours…
…if you can count!
Now, look what we have
here before us.
We’ve got the Muslims…
…sitting next to
the Jews.
We’ve got the Christians …
…right by the Atheists

The Whites up against the Blacks and the heterosexuals back to back with the homosexuals.

Nobody is wasting nobody.

That…
…is a miracle.
And miracles
is the way things ought to be.
You’re standing right now
with nine delegates from every race, nationality religion and sexual orientation
That’s over 7 and a half billion humans.
Now, put that in perspective and you’ll understand there ain’t but a handful of racist, misogynist, intolerant hate filled humans left in this whole world

Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?

Now here’s the sum total.
Unity and tolerance could run this world.
We could make it a paradise. Because we got the Earth

Can you dig it?

The problem in the past
has been those committed to hate and division turning us against one another.
We have been unable
to see the truth,
because we’ve been fighting
for 10 square feet of ground,
our turf, our little piece of turf.
That’s crap, brothers and sisters
The turf is ours by right
because it’s our turn.
All we have to do
is see the good in each other
We slowly root out the hate from each corner of the globe
Secure our territory,
secure our turf
because it’s all our turf and this Earth would be a paradise.

Can you dig it.

An Angel Walks in a Room

An angel walks into a room with a Christian who celebrates Christmas. A Jew who celebrates Hanukkah and an African American who celebrates Kwanza. The angel quickly looks around and says Happy Holidays to everyone. At that moment, an individual in the corner sighs loudly. The angel turns to the man and asks, is there a problem, sir? To which the man responded, well, since you asked, there is. I’m so tired of you liberals and your war on Christmas. What wrong with just saying Merry Christmas as we did in the good old days. The angel looked at the man and laughed and then politely said, sir, it would seem you and not me who is waging war on Christmas. Me? Responded the man shockingly. Yes, you said the angel, for on the day Jesus was born, an angel-like myself told all those in the manger I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. He did not identify only a selection of people to wish great joy. He wished it to all. We are all God’s children, and he wishes that we love each other and respect each other faiths as his children. If you choose to turn a cold shoulder to or belittle those who wish happiness to all, then it is you who are soiling the true meaning of Christmas.

The Alt-Right’s sins against the Lord.

One of the significant aspects of American society is the right to free speech. No matter how hateful and divisive it is. No matter how vile you may take the message to be, it is the right of every individual or group to voice their opinion freely.

This weekend exactly one year after Unite the Right, the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, many of the same white-nationalist, paramilitary, and other right-wing groups are planning to come together again — this time, in Washington, D.C.

In many ways, it is a good thing that these groups are permitted to use their first amendment right to hold these rallies as it sheds light on the vile, dangerous and disgusting message of division and hate they preach. A spotlight for the rest of America to witness and be repulsed by, hopefully forcing them to admit there is cancer in America that needs to be removed. Discussions about race and social inequalities can not be swept under the rug any longer but must be confronted head-on if we are ever going to move forward as a nation.

These rallies also shine a light on the sins of those individuals who preach hate. The majority of them call themselves Christians but deny the undeniable; we are all one created in the image of our Lord.

27 So God created mankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:27

They presuppose that they are greater than the Lord they claim to worship. That they have the right to determine which of the Lord’s children are worthy and which are not. A direct rejection of the Lord’s commandment to us. As is written in John 13:34:

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another

The Lord created each of us in His image. He loves each of us unconditionally. He does not play favorites based on the color of our skin or our religious beliefs.

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise. – Galatians 3:26-29

Since the beginning, it has been the Lord’s desire for us to live together in peace and unity.

1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! – Psalms 133:1

And He warned us to avoid those who would speak differently!

17. Now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. 18. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words, they deceive innocent people. – Romans 16:17-18

So this weekend, let us stand at a distance, watch and expose to the world those with malice in their hearts, sinners against the Lord.

Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. – Ephesians 5:11

But as with all things with the Lord, reject their beliefs but be prepared to forgive those among them who repent their sins and ask for help in finding their way back onto the path of spirituality.

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. – Galatians 6:1

Letter to an ex

Life’s too short to hide your feelings, better to bear your heart and soul than to wake every morning the rest of your life with regret. So let me be brutally honest, I am still very much in love with you; I miss everything about you – the sound of your voice, your breathtaking beauty, your dazzling smile, your mesmerizing eyes, and the sweet taste of your kiss. But most importantly, I miss having you, the woman I love, there every day when I wake up.
It always amazed me – the connection I felt the very first moment I kissed you. Love at first kiss – YES!! When I looked in your eyes after that first kiss, I knew you were the only one I would ever want to spend my life with. You are my best friend, my lover, the person I have given the key to my heart. My love for you has no end of the day – for my love for you is everlasting. I do not need others to confirm this; I only need to know my heart. Despite our time apart, that feeling has not changed; in fact, it has only intensified, and I very much regret letting other things get in the way of me showing that to you every day.
I’m not asking you to go back to how it was. Instead, I’m asking you to go forward, to a new start, a new beginning. I hope that in your heart, somewhere, a little bit of “us” still exists. I know I am not perfect. I know I made some terrible mistakes, and I am very sorry for them; there is not a day that goes by that I don’t deeply regret them. But I have heard it said the past does not erase the future; you learn from your mistakes and become a better person, So I ask that you consider reopening your heart to a future with me, That you allow me to show you that I am still very much the man you fell in love only better having learned from my mistakes. Open your heart once again to us, and I will ensure that every day of our lives will be nothing short of a remarkable and passionate love affair.
