In 2008 I was transfixed to my television screen with tears in my eyes as Barack Obama and his family celebrated his historic victory, becoming the first African American President of the United States of America in Chicago’s Grant Park.
Here was a moment I never believed I would live to see.
Here was a man that looked like me
Here was a family that looked like mine.
Here was a family that was now the FIRST family.
It was a moment that I will always remember. It said to me that maybe just maybe, America has turned a corner. Perhaps people of color will finally be afforded the respect that they have always deserved. Maybe America was finally going to live up to the words on which it was founded that all people are created equal. Maybe Doctor Martin Luther King Jr’s dream that we will be judged by our character’s content and not the color of our skin was finally on the cusp of becoming a reality.
But then came 2016, and even though, for eight years, President Obama and his entire family were the personifications of grace and dignity, America elected a man who was the polar opposite. A man who campaigned on division and tactically embraced racism. Maybe I thought to myself, America hasn’t turned that corner.
But as miserable as 2020 has been, something special was happening. 2020 saw the rise of the Coalition of the Righteous. A coalition of varying ethnic and religious groups, gender and sexual orientations, young and old, and they were ready to rebuke Donald Trump’s message of racism and bigotry.
Today the hope I had in 2008 is building in my heart again. On Saturday night, I beamed with happiness as I watch Senator Kamala Harris. a woman of color, address our country as the first female Vice President-Elect. It was an emotional moment as I thought to myself, for 400 years, they have tried to silence us, but here Senator Harris stood, and as she spoke, you could almost hear the wind whispering in the background saying:
WE ARE STILL HERE, AND WE ARE EXTRAORDINARY!
SAY IT LOUD I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD!

A Day of Celebration
Today we celebrate the 90th birthday of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior and the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama. Both of these men exemplified class and dignity. They inspired us to treat each other as brothers and sisters and motivated us to be a better person today than we were yesterday. They represented the promise of what America is supposed to be and it is in acting in their spirit that will Make America Great.
Can You Dig It
I say the future is ours…
…if you can count!
Now, look what we have
here before us.
We’ve got the Muslims…
…sitting next to
the Jews.
We’ve got the Christians …
…right by the Atheists
The Whites up against the Blacks and the heterosexuals back to back with the homosexuals.
Nobody is wasting nobody.
That…
…is a miracle.
And miracles
is the way things ought to be.
You’re standing right now
with nine delegates from every race, nationality religion and sexual orientation
That’s over 7 and a half billion humans.
Now, put that in perspective and you’ll understand there ain’t but a handful of racist, misogynist, intolerant hate filled humans left in this whole world
Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?
Now here’s the sum total.
Unity and tolerance could run this world.
We could make it a paradise. Because we got the Earth
Can you dig it?
The problem in the past
has been those committed to hate and division turning us against one another.
We have been unable
to see the truth,
because we’ve been fighting
for 10 square feet of ground,
our turf, our little piece of turf.
That’s crap, brothers and sisters
The turf is ours by right
because it’s our turn.
All we have to do
is see the good in each other
We slowly root out the hate from each corner of the globe
Secure our territory,
secure our turf
because it’s all our turf and this Earth would be a paradise.
Can you dig it.
A new day – A fresh canvas
Self doubt does not protect you from failure but from your chances of success.
You think your self doubt protects you, shields you from the unknown, the possibilities of failure. You believe your self doubt has served you well. You do not call it self doubt you call it practical and smart decision making. But deep down you realize that your self doubt has limited your potential. Your life can best be described as humdrum, you are paralyzed to step out of the box and seize the opportunities presented to you for fear of failure There is a part of you that craves more but your self doubt or as you would say your smart and practical decision making has convinced you to accept the status quo. After all you tell yourself if you march to the beat of the drummer and don’t rock the boat everything will be fine. You no longer grow and growth is paramount to a person’s long term happiness in themselves. Fortunately you are not bound by self doubt you can overcome it. The first step is taking a step back and admitting that you have it. Nothing can be overcome unless you believe it is there in the first place. Once you have acknowledged self doubt you define yourself in the positive. Defining yourself in a positive light rather that relying on the opinions of others will help you build self worth. Having a healthy self worth means you look inward not outward for validation never having to question if others think you can accomplish something but knowing you can accomplish it. Embrace the opportunities presented to you with the full knowledge that you may fail. Accept that failure is but a building block of success providing you with valuable lessons. Finally build on your small successes, drink them in no matter how small they may be, as they will help your self confidence evolve. Self confidence is like the proverbial snowball rolling down hill, except your self confidence will be headed the other way, the more you achieve now the greater it becomes later. Once you have decided to step out of the box you are currently in and grab hold of your future follow these steps to cast away your self doubt and to unleash the potential that lives within you.
