You Were Too Busy

You never saw me. Oh you saw the color of my skin but you never saw me. 

How could you?

When I walked in the store you were too busy following me around.

When I sat down at my desk you were too busy wondering how did I get into this school. 

When I moved into my office you were too busy thinking I was just another affirmative action hire. 

When I moved into my home you were too busy wondering if the property value would go down.

But what you didn’t see is while you were too busy to see me I was too busy to see you either.

Not because of the color of your skin.

That was of no Importance to me,

Because I know you have the system rigged against me  

I was too busy studying and working twice as hard as you.

I was too busy finishing in the top 10% of my high school class.

I was too busy deciding what university was worthy of me accepting their full academic scholarship.

I was too busy graduating from that university summa cum laude.

I was too busy upon graduation shifting through my countless job offers

I was too busy purchasing my home because that full academic scholarship I got meant I didn’t have all that student debt you did.

So since you can’t see me let me tell you who I am.

I’m that person who will never fake who I am just to make you feel comfortable, 

who has no desire to prove my worth to you, 

who will never apologize for the hue of my skin.

So, you keep busy looking at my beautiful bronze skin 

or

get with the times and see me for who I am.

I May Not Get There With You

I may not get there with you

Just seven of the four thousand one hundred and seventy-one words in Martin Luther King’s Jr. I’ve Been to the Mountaintop speech. That speech would be the last one he ever delivered as he was assassinated the very next day at the young age of 39. There are so many speeches and quotes uttered by Dr. King that have personally motivated and inspired me to be a better person. But those seven words above all others have always had a special meaning to me.

Dr.King delivered those words in a speech to support a strike by 1,300 sanitation workers, mostly African-American men, who were protesting the horrendous working conditions, poverty-level wages, and the refusal of the city to recognize their union, sadly issues that are still prevalent today. With those seven words Dr. King told the world he was aware his own life may very well be cut short because of his crusade to force America to abide by the words on which it was founded.

That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

But he was not afraid to die. Not because he embraced death, not because he wanted to die. Because as he said in his own words our lives begin to end when we stay silent about things that matter. So on that night he refused to stay silent, he told everyone in Memphis, Tennessee that night that now was not the time to turn back out of fear. Now was the time to press on down the path of righteousness even if that path was fraught with inherent dangers. That they could not sit quietly in fear an accept the injustices they were being subjected to, it would be unconscionable to do so.

Today we celebrate his birthday and I ponder what humanity could accomplish, what heights we could reach, where we may already be, if each of us had even a fraction of the resolve and courage that Dr.King had to do what was right despite what it may cost us personally.

I may not get there with you – just seven words but seven words that still resonate loudly today

To lead by fear is not leadership

To lead by fear is not leadership. Fear is an illusion used by those who lack the basic traits required to truly be a leader and that illusion can only be maintained for so long.  Because like a small child most people will wake up one day and realize, for one reason or another, that the boogeymen used by the so-called leader to scare them does not really exist and once that illusion is gone so too is the illusion of power that the supposed leader wields.

The real leader has it within them the ability to inspire rather than scare. The capacity to encourage rather than discourage. The vision to show others that change can be a good thing and should not be feared. That we should not look to impeded that which is different but instead seek it out so that we may tear down the walls that divide us and confidently moving forward rather than cowering behind a wall of fear.

The true leader leaves a legacy, one of integrity, intelligence and truth.

Thursday

Good Morning all we wake to another day thanks to the Lord our God and that day is Thursday. Thursday! Yeah I know Thursday just that day you’ve got to grind through to get to Friday. But let’s make this Thursday one to remember. Go out be bold today. Do something you’ve been wanting to do but were to afraid too, as long as it’s legal 😄. Treat yourself to a gift, as long as it doesn’t break the bank.  Take that special someone to lunch or dinner. Buy that special someone roses for no reason other than to say I you love, yes that means you too ladies. Do whatever it takes because Thursday isn’t just that day you have to grind through to get to Friday Thursday can be whatever you want it to be. So make it great! 

He’s everywhere you just have to look

So this morning I’m in the shower this morning and I look to my left out the frosted window. Now you can’t see anything unless it’s right up against the window and even then it’s hard to make out. But this morning there it was clear as day what I could only assume was a twig has lodged it self between the bottom and top pane.

So what?

Well this twig was shaped like a cross.

Just a twig that happened to look like a cross?

You could believe that but I choose to believe that a twig in the shape of a cross whose image in a frosted window came through as clear as day was the Lord saying Carl as you start the week know that I got you everything going to be OK.
