Today is the beginning of Black History month, and for the second day in a row, several HBCUs we’re the target of bomb threats; now more than ever, with certain segments of our society seemingly determined to turn back the clock while simultaneously restricting the teaching of history, we must take every measure to learn about our heritage and be proud of not only how as a people we have overcome the barriers put in place to keep us down but be proud of the vast contributions African Americans have made to this country. Contributions that have made us an indelible part of its fabric.

I Love My Black Skin
I wake every morning, look in the mirror, and marvel at my beautiful black skin. My skin tells the world who I am. It announces that I am part of a unique group of people. Oppressed for centuries, our souls were never shackled, our spirits were never broke. The fire that burns within each of us was never extinguished. The sun shines upon this earth, giving all of us life, but it is my black skin that absorbs its energy and radiates with beauty. My skin is but one shade of a grand mosaic that is black; be it pecan, caramel, milk chocolate, or cacao, one thing is certain, they are all beautiful. Each day I look to the heavens and thank the Lord for my black skin because it declares openly to the world that I am special, I am strong, I am unique; I am black and I am beautiful.
We Keep Moving Forward
The movie character Rocky Balboa said It’s not about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.
You have hit us hard.
Shackled us in the chains of bondage
Lynched us under cover of night
Brutalized us for the color of our skin
Beat us when we demanded to be treated as equals
Oppressed us economically
Marginalized us socially
Devalued our lives
But we keep moving forward.
Does that surprise you? It shouldn’t. We are a unique people; our indomitable spirit keeps us moving forward in the face of all things done against us. It is a spirit that not only keeps us moving forward; it has protected and strengthened us. It is a spirit that screams WE ARE BLACK EXCELLENCE!
