A New Year

It is that time once again.  The ending of one year the beginning of another.

A new year!  A call to action! The opportunities to be better tomorrow and each succeeding day than you are today.

A chance to break free of the mundane, to refuse to paint in black and white and between the lines but instead wherever your imagination takes you.  To paint your future in the bold strokes and daring colors it was meant to be painted in

A new year is the chance to embrace the truth. The truth that nothing is impossible as long as your faith remains strong and you dare to dream.

A new year,

A blank canvass,

A new beginning,

Seize it,

Make it yours

Because after all the future is but what you make it

Look inward not outward

I do not look outward for acknowledgment but inward.  It is my confidence and self esteem that I thrive on. They are what confirms I am worthy of great things in life, not the opinions of other. When others tell me I am unworthy or that I may not be able to succeed at something I just laugh because their negativity pales in comparison to my belief in myself. Others will never deter me from achieving my dreams. Because I know who I am and what I can accomplish and that is anything I put my mind to.

Passion is my driving force

I had just finished a long difficult project when one of my co-workers remarked you must be exhausted that project must have taken a lot out of you. Interesting I thought I’m not tired at all in fact I’m full of energy. Why? Because I was passionate about the project I had just finished. My passion pushed me to keep going when the project hit roadblocks. My passion drove me to learn new and exciting ways to see this project succeed. My passion helped me take those lessons learned and translate them into creative and innovative strategies which pushed the project to success. And at the end when the project was a success my passion energized me to a whole new level. Passion is funny that way it is a force of nature that can drive you to pursue your biggest dreams, chase opportunities you would normally ignore. It can unleash your talent and push you to be the best you can be. The moral to this story? Simple, follow your heart and do what you’re passionate about in doing so you will find not only your full potential but all the possibilities that potential yields.

Dreams – The roadmap to greatness

Dreams are the roadmap to greatness. You will never reach your full potential without dreaming of the possibilities that you can aspire to achieve. The power of dreams manifest themselves in a mind set that asks what if, that casts away fears of failure. Dreams set the goals, spur you to action, keep you focused and moving forward. Just imagine a life without dreams, living day to day existing only to exist. No goals to aspire to, no desire to grow, a life defined by the routine safety of the known at the expense of reaching for opportunities in the unknown. Is this really the life you want? Of course not, you want to spread your wings and reach your full potential and the only way to that is to follow your dreams.

You can’t always get what you want – but you may find what you need

The Rolling Stones once sang “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometime you find you get what you need”. These words could not ringer truer in our live. Many times we doubt our ability to reach our full potential. We shy away from “going for it” either thinking we can’t do it, others telling us we can’t do it or simply a matter of fearing we will fail in trying to do it. This results in lost opportunities not only the opportunity of reaching the goal at the end of the journey but the opportunities that inevitably present them along the way. By not even trying we cheat ourselves of the chance to dream big by taking advantage of the possibilities life presents us. Possibilities we may not have known were out there but offer so much potential once we discover them.

Your own high standards are the keys to success

Ray Kroc once commented “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.” Setting high standards for yourself will force you to push yourself to achieve your potential, to grow each day, to be better than you were yesterday. You believe that you will accomplish this growth through hard-work and integrity. You are both a visionary and a creative mind seeing the possibilities where others don’t and the ways to achieve them. There is a persistence in your focus, you will not allow set backs to deter you from reaching your goals. You will not stop until you succeed. Most importantly your actions inspire those you lead to work hard to reach their full potential as well. To live up the same high standards you set for yourself by working hard, and not cutting corners. They take on the mantra of a commitment to excellence This undoubtedly leads to a greater chance of success not only for them but your business as well. Because while bosses demand excellence from employees, leaders inspire employees to achieve it. You simply can not have low standards for yourself and expect those around you to operate with high standards simply. because you order it. Businesses undoubtedly take on the characteristics of the person in charge. The moral to this story? It’s simple the best way to motivate your staff to fulfill their potential and ensure your business’s success is to live your life with a set of high standard. Do that and those you lead will be inspired to follow.

Nothing just happens without a strong ethic

Self Confidence – check
Fearlessness – check
Optimism – check
Work ethic – not so much

Nothing in life just happens, successful people go out and make it happen. Just because you believe you deserve something are fearless enough to pursue it and optimistic enough to believe that the universe is going to give it you doesn’t mean it’s going to happen without you have the passion and the focus to roll up your sleeves and sweat to make it happen.

The pursuit of perfection

In life it is possible to meticulously plan and execute something to perfection and still not reach the desired result. Is that a failure? Should we throw our hands up and walk away from future opportunities convinced we simply are not meant to succeed? Of course not. How we deal with failure is as important as how we deal with success. We should strive for perfection with the understanding that the pursuit is just as important as reaching the goal. The pursuit is a chance for us to learn, change and grow molding us into into a better person than we were before it.

You are not born great You grow in greatness

Mario Puzo said it best in his classic The Godfather:

Great men are not born great, they grow great

Many have given up on their dreams but without dreams there can be no growth and without growth you can not aspire to be great. You stand still frozen in place, overwhelmed by fear of the unknown and failure, accepting whatever the world bestows upon you instead of cultivating your dreams.  Your life motionless.  As the great Albert Einstein once commented:

Life is like riding a bicycle in order to keep your balance you must keep moving

You must start to move and it starts by believing in your ability to accomplish anything that you can dream of. Cast aside those that say you can’t and shout to the world I can. Throw away those fears of failure by taking that step off the cliff believing you can fly. Ignore how others define you in favor of defining yourself. Understand that no matter who you are today by seizing the opportunities in front of you tomorrow you will be better. Keep moving toward your dreams and each day you shall grow. Because you are not born great you grow great.
