They Only Dare to Whisper

Ssh, can you hear them?
Of course not they only dare to whisper if they dare even whisper at all
But I shout out loud for all to hear, and I do so unapologetically
I know our time on this planet is but a blink of the eye
So I listen to the rhythm of my heart
I embrace my dreams
No one can deter me
No one can stop me
I will reach for the stars
I will not silence the talent that resides within me
Others may only dare whisper if they dare even whisper at all
But I do not fear rocking the boat
I am not afraid to stand alone
I have the courage to be great
As Prince said, Baby, I’m a star

If a tree falls in a forest – The Critical Race Debate

The age-old question asks If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? As conservatives enact laws to shut down the teaching of topics such as critical race theory, an academic movement that seeks to critically examine social, cultural, and legal issues as they relate to race and racism. The question to ask today is if we ignore the inherent racism that has played a pivotal role in so many aspects of this country since its birth did racism ever exist?

Anyone who looks at the history of American with an objective eye would have to agree that several factors, including redlining, underfunding schools in communities of color, the lack of culturally diverse teaching in schools, disproportionate incarceration of people of color, disproportionate disciplining of students of color, negative media stereotypes, lack of employment opportunities and a host of other factors have contributed to today’s America being 100-meter dash with one group being afforded a 90-meter head start.

The argument that students—predominantly white students—will be exposed to supposedly damaging or self-demoralizing ideas is nonsense.  Germany has not tried to sweep its Nazi past under the rug.  For example, as the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz drew near. Angela Merkel delivered a speech at the Auschwitz Memorial, where she expressed a “deep sense of shame for the barbaric crimes that were here committed by Germans.”   Major German cities boast monuments, museums, and centers dedicated to the study of antisemitism and the Holocaust.  Its schools present a conscious and responsible approach to dealing with the past sins of Nazi-era Germany.  The past has already taken place, it cannot be changed, and it cannot simply be ignored because it makes some feel uncomfortable. It must be taught so we learn from our past mistakes and understand how we can change and develop for the better as people. If we ignore it, we doom ourselves to repeating those same mistakes and never growing as a society.

THE JOURNEY HOME

Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

The Journey Home is my personal exercise in strengthening and reawakening my faith after a near-death experience. So many things challenge and make us question our faith. Yet, it is these times of doubt that paradoxically we exhibit our strongest faith as it is in these times; our faith brings us through the troubled waters we are dealing with. This book was written to help both you and I reflect on our spirituality and get closer to the Lord. I hope it gives you as much enjoyment reading and hearing its message as I enjoyed writing it.

WHAT IF I TOLD YOU?

What if I told you don’t live to live but LIVE TO LIVE? Would you know the difference?

What if I told you it’s not what other people see when they look at you that defines you? It’s what you see when you look at yourself that determines how high you will soar?

What if I told you that the only person who can take your dreams away from you is yourself? Would you start believing in yourself or keep looking for reasons why you can’t.

What if I told you the people who say you can’t make it are the same ones who are afraid you will?

What if I told you that the greatest tragedy of the world today is that the ignorance of the many too often silences your greatness? Would you stay true to yourself or change so you can “fit in”?

What if I told you that the people who tell you that you cannot be great are usually the same ones who do not possess the courage to try and be great themselves.

What if I told you life is too short to settle for being ordinary? That to great you have to be bold and step off the cliff.  Are you ready for that, or are you so afraid that you’ll fall you accept being just one of many?

OUR LIVES HAVE ALWAYS MATTERED OUR VOICES WILL NEVER BE SILENCED

When a segment of a society willfully marginalizes another segment is not surprising to see unrest. It is not surprising to see the very foundation that it was built begin to crumble. It is not surprising when it starts to crumble from within; For society’s good, the masses must rise and denounce those who spew racism and bigotry. Reject what makes them different, listen, and learn about each other and embrace their diversity. A diversity that has made them stronger. Only then will society be able to say with one voice this the true spirit of our humanity; these are the thoughts, insights, and musing of an everyday African American on the state of race relations in America today.

Love what I am

They’re gone now, but I still know who and what I am, and I love what I see when I look in the mirror. Their presence did make me happy for a while, but it was never the key to my happiness, and yes, their leaving did indeed knock me down at first, but it did not knock me out. It is clear now that our time together wasn’t a test of my character, it was a test of theirs, and they failed, but that’s OK because we’re only human, and we all fail a test sometimes.  But I know I’m worth it, others tell me as much, So while they may have thought they broke me, they could not because it’s me who the people love, me who they cheer.  I’m the people’s hero, now and forever.

Cast Away All Doubt

I have been there; we all have clinging to hope and feeling like we are nurturing little more than a pipe-dream.  Doubt creeps in, and we wonder if we will ever accomplish what we set out to do if we will ever find the happiness we so desperately want. But that doubt is only a state of mind designed to soften the blow if we fail to act a defensive mechanism of sorts. But the truth is to accomplish our goals, manifest our happiness, we must cast away all doubt. For we will never find what we are looking for if deep down we doubt it is even there. We must step bodily to the precipice of our hopes, dreams, and desires and reach out and claim them with no doubts that they are there and no doubt that they are ours for the taking.
